Each year the weather in Minneapolis can bring it early or bring it late, snow that is. Whether it is early or it is late, you can be sure it will definitely come, if you like it or not. Personally I am always happy to get a nice early snowfall before thanks giving. For this season, the 2010 season the first real snow we received was on Saturday the 13th of November. The first real snow and cold weather of the season always gets me pumped up and excited for ice fishing. This is way to early for ice fishing as the lakes won't have enough ice for at least a month or so, so I have other fun activities to do with my kids in the mean time. In this article I would like to let you know of a few.

A favorite of Minneapolis natives is sledding. There is nothing more exhilarating than flying at high speeds down an icy hill on a cold Minnesota day. Wherever you may choose as your sledding location, be sure that you find a hill that is a good size and steep enough to glide down with ease. Another thing to keep an eye out for is that there are not too many obstacles in the sledding path so there is no trouble navigating your way to the bottom of the hill. Besides the path down you will also want to be sure that at the end of your run you end up in a safe environment because we all know that the ER is not a fun place to end a day of sledding. Don't forget your hat and mittens!

One thing that most kids in Minnesota try to do at least once a year is build a snow man. I know my kids want to make a snow man as soon as they see that first tiny flake of snow start coming down. Early in the year when the weather hasn't been below freezing for too many days is usually the perfect weather for building a snow man. The snow early in the year is wet and heavy, and will work absolutely perfect for building your very own Frosty the snowman. Once of the benefits to building a snow man is you don't even need to leave your own yard to do it!! When your done make sure you give Frosty a face and a scarf to keep warm!

Last but not least, making a snow angel is always a very simple and fail safe activity to do in the snow. One of the things that is nice about making a snow angel is that you don't really need to make any special accommodations to do it. The making of a snow angel can take place in any patch of fresh snow that you can lay in. What you need to do to make a snow angel is get on your back in some fresh snow, stretch your legs and your arms all of the way out, and move them as if you were doing jumping jacks. Be sure to bundle up first and it is usually a good idea to make the snow angel right before you head in so that you don't get too wet in this early snow.

I hope after reading this article it might inspire you to try some of the activities I mentioned, it definitely helps to have some fun activities to take your mind off of ice fishing before the lakes are frozen. So whether it's too early for cold weather in Minneapolis for you or not, you still can't go ice fishing yet, so get out of the house and give one of these a try! No matter what activity you want to try, make sure that you buckle up and drive safely when it's snowing, and bundle up and play safely while you're sledding.
